South Carolina is one of the worst states for women, study finds. Here’s why
South Carolina has been named one of the worst states for women.
The Palmetto State ended up in the bottom 10 in a study of factors that contribute to women’s life experiences, according to the personal finance website WalletHub.
South Carolina ranked No. 46 in the analysis of conditions in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, results released Monday show.
It wasn’t the only Southern state to land a spot at the bottom of the list.
Georgia, Texas, West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana all rank among the least friendly places for women.
So what about neighboring North Carolina?
The Tar Heel State fared a bit better, snagging the No. 32 spot in the rankings, according to WalletHub.
To come up with its list, WalletHub says it evaluated social attitudes about women, health care access and economic opportunities. It also weighed safety, finding South Carolina had one of the highest rates for homicides with female victims, results show.
The state has also ranked low on lists of states for working moms and places to raise a family, according to previous WalletHub studies.
Overall, the top-ranking state for women was Massachusetts. Louisiana ended up getting the lowest scores in the country, according to the findings.
The results were released at the start of Women’s History Month, a period that honors the role of women in the United States’ past.
