Lottery tradition paid off big time for SC man. Now he hopes his luck hasn’t run out
A South Carolina man’s lottery tradition paid off — and now he hopes that his lucky streak continues.
The man, who plays the lottery each Friday, was carrying out his weekly routine when he hit the jackpot, officials said.
But even after winning a $200,000 prize, he’s not changing his plans.
“I’m still going by the store on Friday and getting a ticket,” he told the S.C. Education Lottery in a March 18 news release. “I feel almost greedy about doing it. But it would be nice to win again.”
Friday became the man’s “lucky day” after he stopped at the Garden Spot Food Mart in Taylors. While at the Greenville-area business, officials said he spent $5 on a scratch-off ticket for the $200,000 Bonus Bucks game.
It turns out, the ticket beat the 1-in-900,000 odds to score the game’s top prize. The winner, who didn’t want to be identified publicly, kept $138,000 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.
Now, the man plans to save his extra cash for retirement, officials said.
It’s not the first time a routine has led to a lottery win.
In 2020, officials said a North Carolina man was on his daily walk when he bought a ticket worth $25,000 each year.
But in South Carolina, a man won big after changing his habits. He bought a different lottery ticket than usual and discovered that he scored a big windfall, McClatchy News reported in February.
