A 60-year-old man died after a boat propeller hit him on a popular South Carolina lake, officials said.

The propeller hit the man before he was pulled from the water on Sunday, June 5, according to the Oconee County Coroner’s Office.

The man was taken to a hospital, where his cause of death is believed to be blood loss from the boat injury. He was identified in a news release as Scott T. Johnson of Fletcher, North Carolina.

Officials said first responders were called at about 3:30 p.m. to Lake Keowee, which offers swimming, boating and other waterfront activities roughly 35 miles west of Greenville.

The coroner’s office said Johnson was near Fall Creek Landing when his leg was hit by a boat propeller.

When Johnson was taken from the water, officials said he had a cut on his leg. He also suffered cardiac arrest before emergency responders arrived, according to officials.

The coroner’s office said the death is being considered an accident, and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources was investigating.
