Drivers met delays on Interstate 40 in Cary on Thursday afternoon when first one, and then all three lanes of westbound traffic were briefly shut down.

An obstruction in the road near Exit 291 for Cary Towne Boulevard began backing up traffic shortly before 3 p.m.

By 3:08 p.m., one westbound lane was closed. By 3:17 p.m., all three westbound lanes were closed, according to Aaron Moody, assistant director of communications for the N.C. Department of Transportation.

All lanes were reopened by 3:52 p.m., Moody said. He was not able to say what kind of obstruction had caused the closure.
