With Tropical Storm Humberto strengthening to hurricane how will Carolinas be impacted?

Tropical Storm Humberto is gaining strength and will be a hurricane by Sunday night, forecasters say. The storm has passed over the Bahamas and is moving east-northeastward, away from the North Carolina and South Carolina coasts.

The storm won’t bring heavy rainfall to the Carolinas. But, the storm’s swells are causing a significant threat of rip currents along parts of the southeastern U.S. coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters expected the tropical storm to track up the East Coast, similar to Hurricane Dorian’s path earlier this month, but the path shifted away from the North Carolina and South Carolina coasts.

The tropical cyclone could still bring strong winds up to 20 mph through the first half of the week, according to the hurricane center. Forecasters don’t predict any rainfall in the Carolinas as a result of the storm.

Humberto is now the eighth named storm of the season.
