Flood advisory again extended for parts of Triangle as thunderstorms continue
Strong thunderstorms, and frequent lightning, Saturday prompted a flood advisory for Wake County.
Up to 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen in some places in the Triangle with up to another inch expected, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.
A flash flood warning was specifically issued for “west central Wake County” and was extended to 5:30 p.m. with one to three inches of rain already on the ground in some areas, according to the weather service. Areas under the flash flood warning include: Raleigh, Cary, Garner, RDU International Airport, Apex, Morrisville, Research Triangle Park and Umstead State Park.
“While rainfall has ended, several creeks and streams in and around Apex, Morrisville and Cary remain at or above flood stage,” according to the National Weather Service. “The flash flood warning has been extended until these streams drop below flood stage. Flash flooding is already occurring.”
A hazardous weather outlook was in affect for most of central North Carolina with the greatest severe weather threat expected between 1 and 11 p.m. The outlook also included damaging wind gusts.
People should avoid flooded areas and should not drive through flooded streets.
An earlier flood advisory for Wake and Durham counties expired.
Earlier this morning, a “special weather alert” was issued through 10:15 a.m. warning Triangle residents of strong thunderstorms with frequent lightning and winds up to 40 mph.
The NC State-Notre Dame game was halted when lightning got within eight miles of Carter-Finley Stadium, but play was expected to resume about 2:35 p.m.
