Two new storm systems may develop this week. What that could mean for the East Coast

National Hurricane Center

Two weeks before the end of Atlantic Hurricane Season, two systems have developed with the potential to affect the East Coast over the next week or two.

What new systems have developed?

The first is in the southwestern Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center says this one is a large area of showers and thunderstorms associated with a trough of low pressure. Conditions are marginally favorable for the system to develop into a tropical depression later this week as the showers and thunderstorms begin to move to the northeast, forecasters said Tuesday night. The most immediate threat would be to Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center’s forecast shows the system staying offshore but shows it having effects as far north as the N.C. Outer Banks.

The second area meteorologists are watching is off the coast of southern Florida.

There, forecasters expect an area of low pressure to develop Wednesday or Thursday, move northeast toward the Bahamas and then late this week or over the weekend, be off the East Coast.

“Although development into a tropical cyclone appears unlikely, this system is expected to produce gusty winds and heavy rains across portions of southern Florida, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas during the next couple of days,” the hurricane center said in its forecast Tuesday.

If another tropical storm were to develop, it would be named Vince.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, which is when most tropical storms develop. But they can appear at any time during the year.
