There’s a new chance for snow across NC this week. Here’s when & where we could see it
(NOTE: Please see our more updated snow forecast story from Jan. 8.)
As one winter storm system was making its way way out of the state on Monday, Jan. 6, forecasters said another likely will arrive later in the week, bringing new chances for snow to fall across much of North Carolina.
When will the next winter storm arrive?
The storm that brought snow, ice and rain to parts of North Carolina beginning Sunday is expected to move off the coast by late Monday, giving way to clear skies Tuesday through Thursday.
But the cold air will remain, forecasters say, and it will be colder than average for this time of year in Raleigh and central and Eastern North Carolina through the week. Highs will be in the upper 30s to low 40s, and lows will drop into the 20s. It’ll be colder in the mountains, with lows in the teens.
The next system is expected to arrive by Friday, Jan. 10, bringing the chance of precipitation through Saturday morning.
Will Raleigh get snow this weekend?
Forecasters said Monday it was too early to say whether that precipitation would fall as snow or rain, but early indications are that it will start as snow late Friday or early Saturday in some areas before turning into rain and then stopping in the afternoon on Saturday.
The rain/snow line — which divides the lucky from the unlucky, depending on your meteorological predisposition — for the Friday event was unclear as of Monday. Forecasters said most computer models show the rain/snow line shifting north of the I-85 corridor by Saturday morning, but it could be far south of there as the system arrives.
Local forecasts as of Monday call for a chance of snow Friday night or early Saturday from the mountains to Charlotte, as far south as Fayetteville and as far east as Greenville.
Temperatures across central and Eastern North Carolina are expected to reach into the low 40s on Saturday.
