Heading to the coast this weekend? Tropical Storm Chantal may make you think twice.

Those with holiday weekend plans to hit the North Carolina coast may want to think twice as Tropical Storm Chantal approaches.

The storm, which was named Saturday morning, is expected to make landfall north of Charleston on Saturday and hit North Carolina on Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Chantal developed from a tropical depression that formed off the southeastern coast of the U.S. on Friday, the center said.

In its latest weather advisory, published at 11 a.m. Saturday, the center warned the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall totaling between 2 and 4 inches through Monday. In some areas, rainfall could reach 6 inches, and flash flooding could occur, according to the report.

The area between Surf City, North Carolina, and South Santee River, South Carolina, is under a tropical storm warning, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Raleigh likely won’t see much rain, with 1 to 2 inches expected across the Sandhills and Coastal Plain, according to a Saturday morning weather briefing.

Those traveling to the coast should prepare for life-threatening rip currents and dangerous surf, the National Weather Service said.
