Stay cool this weekend, there’s a heat advisory for much of NC and possible storms
Saturday is a scorcher, with a heat advisory today until 8 p.m. The heat index is expected to be up to 107 degrees. The heat wave will continue on Sunday.
There is a chance of severe thunderstorms until 10 p.m. Saturday for Wake, Durham and Orange counties along with surrounding areas in central North Carolina.
The National Weather Service heat advisory began at 11 a.m. Saturday for much of North Carolina, including the all of the Piedmont, Sandhills and Coastal Plain.
Temperatures in the Triangle are in the 90s today, with a heat index higher than 100 degrees.
The NWS has already issued a heat advisory for Sunday as well, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with high temperatures continuing along with a heat index up to 109 degrees in some areas.
How to beat the heat
The high temperatures and humidity may cause heat illnesses, the NWS in Raleigh warns. Here’s their advice to stay cool:
▪ Drink plenty of fluids
▪ Stay in the shade
▪ Stay in an air-conditioned space
▪ If you need to work outside, take frequent breaks to rest, in the shade or air conditioning.
▪ Limit any strenuous activities to early morning or evening
▪ If you spend any time outside, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
▪ Check on family and neighbors.
Democratic Gov. Josh Stein warned about the weather on social media, posting, “This weekend, we are looking at extremely high temperatures — with heat advisories in effect across North Carolina.”
“Make sure your weekend includes plans to stay inside if possible and cool and hydrated if not,” Stein advised.
