Triangle schools announce delays, remote learning with winter weather forecast

Several Triangle school systems will be closed for in-person learning on Friday or opening on a delayed schedule due to the expected snowy weather conditions.

Wake County schools announced late Thursday evening it would operate on a two-hour delay.

Other districts on a two-hour delay are: Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, Orange County, Johnston County and Chatham County Schools.

Durham Public Schools announced that Friday will be a remote learning day for students and a remote workday for staff.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro school officials said the delay will give them more time to get buildings ready and to let them assess conditions overnight in case they need to make additional schedule changes for Friday. Chapel Hill-Carrboro said it would let families know around 6 a.m. Friday if there are any more changes.

“There’s a Winter Weather Advisory for Orange County and parts of central North Carolina,” Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools said in its announcement. “Even though the impact in Chapel Hill and Carrboro may be minimal, we want to give our commuting staff, students and families extra time — and daylight — to drive, walk or bike safely.”

Conditions aren’t forecast to be as severe in Wake and Johnston counties, which haven’t announced any delays for Friday, as of 6 p.m. Thursday.
