The NC Outer Banks will get snow. Watch it fall with these live beach cams

Blizzard conditions with 70 mph wind gusts could wallop the Outer Banks and much of Coastal North Carolina as the region braces for what’s shaping up to be a historic winter storm.

The National Weather Service warned of “life-threatening conditions” ahead of the weekend storm set to bring a dangerous combination of snow, bone-chilling cold and high wind. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect Friday, Jan. 30 night through 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1.

Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour are expected as the storm peaks, and wind gusts of 55-70 mph could impact the barrier islands. Further inland, gusts could reach between 40-55 mph.

“Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow,” forecasters said. “Plan on slippery road conditions. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.”

Here’s the latest predictions of snowfall through Sunday from the National Weather Service’s Newport/Morehead City office, as of 7 a.m. Jan. 31.

• Rodanthe, Frisco and Ocracoke: 4 to 6 inches
• Swanquarter, New Bern, Havelock, Morehead City, Jacksonville and North Topsail Beach: 8 to 12 inches

The National Weather Service also cautions that there could be coastal flooding due to a combination of “high water levels, above-normal tides and wave run-up,” leading to 2 to 4 feet of “inundation” at high tide. The greatest impacts are expected Sunday morning across Hatteras Island.
