Duke Energy urges power conservation Monday. See Triangle outages on these maps.

Duke Energy officials urged customers across North Carolina on Sunday to conserve power due to unusually high energy demands across the East Coast as temperatures fell 10 to 20 degrees below normal.

The energy company sent out emails and texts to customers asking to conserve energy between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday by setting their thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting, and avoiding the use of electric ovens, stove tops, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, electronics and space heaters.

Duke Energy also requested turning off unnecessary appliances and lights.

For those with electric vehicles, power company officials asks customers not to charge until midday.

To stay warm, the company suggests opening blinds and curtains during daylight hours and wearing extra layers.

“You can help us protect the electric grid & avoid possible temporary power outages by cutting back on nonessential energy use,” a text message from the company said.

As of 3:30 p.m. Sunday, just over 2,200 people were without power across North Carolina, which was down from the 5,185 just before 11:30 a.m.

However, 200 additional customers along Hillsborough Street in Raleigh between Brooks Avenue and Cox Avenue lost power just after 3 p.m.

Power has been restored for most of the rest of the Triangle.
