Frost advisory for the Piedmont region for Tuesday

At 2:01 a.m. on Monday, the NWS Raleigh NC issued a frost advisory valid for Tuesday between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. The advisory is for Person, Granville, Vance, Warren, Halifax, Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Orange, Durham, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Davidson, Randolph, Chatham, Wake, Johnston, Wilson and Lee counties.

"Temperatures in the lower to middle 30s Tuesday morning will be supportive of frost formation," can be expected according to the NWS. "Temperatures in urban areas will not be as cold, where frost will be less likely."

"Frost could harm or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation or plants if left uncovered," explains the NWS. "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold."

This advisory is in effect until Tuesday at 8 a.m.

What to do if there is a frost advisory

Frost advisories are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds, and sky cover are favorable for frost development. This is most likely to happen when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, the frost is severe enough to end the growing season and is then referred to as a 'killing frost'.

According to the NWS, if a frost advisory is issued for your area, cover up sensitive plants before the sun sets so that it can help retain heat near the plants, or move the plants indoors for the night, if possible.
