A report was issued from the NWS Newport/Morehead City NC on Tuesday at 2:28 p.m. for fire danger until Wednesday at 5 a.m. The alert is for Mainland Dare, Mainland Hyde, Northern Craven, Southern Craven, West Carteret, East Carteret, Inland Onslow, Coastal Onslow, Northern Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island as well as Martin, Pitt, Washington, Tyrrell, Greene, Beaufort, Duplin, Lenoir, Jones and Pamlico counties.
"The combination of dry fuels, gusty southwest to west winds, and low relative humidity of about 20-30% late Wednesday morning into Wednesday evening will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires on Wednesday. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service is currently in place. Open burning of any kind is illegal," explains the NWS.
This alert is in effect until Wednesday at 5 a.m.
