The NWS Wakefield VA issued a report at 4:56 p.m. on Saturday for thunderstorms and heavy rain until 5:45 p.m. The alert is for Hertford, Gates, Pasquotank, Camden, Chowan and Perquimans counties.
"At 4:52 p.m., radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain were located along a line extending from near Morgans Corner to near Ryland. Movement was north at 15 mph. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches in less than an hour and wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible with these storms," says the NWS.
Locations impacted by the alert include Elizabeth City, Camden, Gatesville, Sunbury, South Mills, Ryland, Tyner, Morgans Corner, Hobbsville, Belvidere, Pasquotank, Gliden, Horseshoe, Pierceville, Arrowhead Beach, Peach, Parkville, Tar Corner, Nicanor and Sharon. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Heavy rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
This alert is in effect until 5:45 p.m.

If finding indoor shelter is not an option:
- Steer clear of open fields, hilltops, or ridge tops.
- Keep a distance from tall, isolated trees or other elevated objects. If in a forest, stay close to lower trees.
- If you are in a group, disperse to prevent the current from passing between group members.
- If you are camping in an open setting, set up camp in a valley, ravine, or other low spot. Bear in mind, a tent does not protect you from lightning.
- Maintain a safe distance from water, wet items, and metal objects. Water and metal do not attract lightning, yet they conduct electricity efficiently.
