Heat advisory in place for Eastern North Carolina until early Saturday evening

On Saturday at 2:05 a.m. a heat advisory was issued by the NWS Newport/Morehead City NC valid between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The advisory is for Northern Craven, Southern Craven, West Carteret, Inland Onslow and Coastal Onslow as well as Duplin, Lenoir, Jones and Pamlico counties.
The NWS informs, "Heat index values up to 105 degrees expected."
"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," explains the NWS.
This advisory is in effect until 5 p.m.
During heat waves, consider the following tips from the NWS
- Stay hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
- Seek shelter: Stay indoors in an air-conditioned room to keep cool.
- Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet safety: Do not leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
- Take extra precautions outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, be sure to take additional safety measures.
- Consider the timing: When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Know the red flags: Understand the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress comfortably: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
To minimize risks during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises incorporating frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone experiences heat-related symptoms, promptly relocate them to a cool and shaded spot. In case of an emergency, dial 911.
