An updated report was issued from the NWS Raleigh NC on Monday at 9:30 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 10:30 p.m. The alert is for Warren, Halifax, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Wake, Johnston, Wilson, Harnett and Wayne counties.
Residents can anticipate wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
"At 9:29 p.m., Doppler radar tracked strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Roanoke Rapids to near Nashville to near Fuquay-Varina. Movement was east at 40 mph," explains the NWS. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects."
Locations impacted by the alert include Raleigh, Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, Roanoke Rapids, Tarboro, Smithfield, Nashville, Lillington, Halifax and Wilson.
The NWS comments, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Strong winds may occur well ahead of any rain or lightning. Do not wait for the sound of thunder before taking cover. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. for central North Carolina."
This alert is in effect until 10:30 p.m.
Actions to take when lightning threat is imminent

- Wait for 30 minutes after the most recent lightning or thunder before venturing outside.

- Avoid tall, isolated trees or other elevated objects. If you are in a forest, stick to areas with shorter tree cover.
- When in a group, space out to prevent the current from transferring between individuals.
- When camping in an open environment, select a campsite in a valley, ravine, or low region. Just remember, tents do not offer protection from lightning.
- Keep a distance from water, wet articles, and metal objects. While water and metal do not draw lightning, they are proficient conductors of electricity.

- Turn on your headlights - Even when it's light outside, using headlights can improve visibility and alert other drivers to your presence.
- While on the road - Opt for the middle lanes and remain on higher ground. Rainwater tends to gather along the road edges.
- Avoid puddles - Driving into puddles or low rainwater areas can lead to vehicles hydroplaning or losing control.
- Maintain a safe distance from large vehicles - Trucks or buses can produce a water spray that hampers visibility.
- Steer clear of flooded areas - When coming to a flooded road, turn around and head back. Flash flooding currents are strong and can sweep drivers off roadways. Driving through deep water can also affect a vehicle's mechanical and electrical systems.
What is hydroplaning?
