A man in Clayton, NC, may have died of carbon monoxide poisoning during Tropical Storm Ian. A generator was found running in his garage.

Authorities say a man may have died of carbon monoxide poisoning after he was found inside his home in Clayton where a gas-powered generator was running.

Clayton firefighters were called to the home on Trenburg Place, off Little Creek Church Road, at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. They found a generator running in the garage, which was not properly vented, said town spokesman Nathanael Shelton.

Johnston County EMS tried to revive the man, 65, but could not.

His death is one of four in North Carolina related to Tropical Storm Ian, according to Gov. Roy Cooper.

Someone told firefighters and EMS that the generator had been running all night, after Tropical Storm Ian passed through North Carolina. They found high levels of carbon monoxide in the home, Shelton said.

The man’s wife was also home at the time but survived, he said.

The investigation has been turned over to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
