Here are all of The News & Observer’s endorsements for Tuesday’s primary

Super Tuesday will present Wake County voters with tough choices on a long primary ballot. We did not endorse in all races — including the Democratic presidential primary — but we do offer these recommendations.

Democratic races

U.S. Senate

Cal Cunningham offers a wider appeal, a diverse coalition of supporters and the most well-funded Democratic campaign, and he does so without compromising Democratic Party values. His candidacy provides the best opportunity for voters who want to unseat the Republican incumbent. We recommend him for the U.S. Senate Democratic primary.

U.S. House District 2

Redrawn House District 2 is now confined to Wake County and considerably friendlier to Democrats. We recommend former Wake County state legislator and 2016 U.S. Senate Democratic nominee Deborah Ross. She is a former head of the North Carolina ACLU and committed to a progressive agenda, but she is also a practical politician who can work across the aisle.

Lieutenant governor

For the nomination for Lt. Governor, we recommend N.C. Sen. Terry Van Duyn of Buncombe. In only her third term she’s quickly earned the respect of Senate colleagues, and as the former Democratic Whip she’s uniquely qualified to rally support for Gov. Cooper’s agenda if he is re-elected

State treasurer

In a three-way race to take on Republican Treasurer Dale Folwell we recommend Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji of Durham. Chatterji is a professor at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and its Sanford School of Public Policy. He also served as a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers during the Obama administration. He would bring energy and imagination to the treasurer’s office.

State superintendent

Five Democrats are contending for the chance to replace outgoing Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Johnson. We recommend Jen Mangrum, a public school teacher for 14 years, who ran a credible campaign in 2018 against N.C. Senate leader Phil Berger. Strongly supported by teachers, Mangrum is best situated to successfully engage in the political debates that will decide how North Carolina will treat its students and educators.

Agriculture commissioner

Three Democrats are competing to take on N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler in November. We recommend Jennifer Wadsworth, a member of the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. Wadsworth is brimming with ideas to make a low-profile office a driver of economic change.

N.C. Senate District 18

We recommend Sarah Crawford. She grew up in Eastern Wake County and is a graduate of N.C. State University. The daughter of a public school teacher, she will push for more funding for schools and Medicaid expansion.

N.C. House District 33

We recommend incumbent Rep. Rosa Gill, a former teacher and longtime advocate for public schools.

N.C. House District 38

We recommend former Wake Superior Court Judge Abe Jones. He will use his legal background to push for criminal justice reforms.

Wake County Board of Commissioners

We recommend incumbent Commissioner Sig Hutchinson for Dist. 1 and Audra Killingsworth, an Apex Town Council member, for Dist. 3. Commissioners are elected countywide.

Republican races

Lieutenant governor

The Republican primary features a solid lineup of qualified candidates, but we recommend former state Rep. Scott Stone as the one who would be the most effective Republican lieutenant governor.

State attorney general

Three candidates are competing for the Republican nomination to face Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein in November. We recommend Christine Mumma, well-known as an advocate for the wrongly convicted as executive director of the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence.

State Superintendent

We recommend State Rep. Craig Horn. His five-term experience in the legislature and years as chair of both the House’s K-12 Education and Education Appropriation Committees uniquely positions him to work on education.

N.C. Senate District 18

We recommend Scott McKaig, an attorney who lives near Wake Forest, supports gun rights and opposes Medicaid expansion, but he breaks from traditional conservative positions on other issues. He favors decriminalizing marijuana and not requiring cash bail in many cases.

N.C. House District 35

We make no recommendation.

N.C. House District 36

We recommend Gil Pagan. He has ideas about improving struggling schools and helped Cary develop a 25-year plan as a member of the town’s Committee for the Future.

N.C. House District 37

We recommend Anna Powell, Fuquay-Varina native and real estate agent. She is a moderate Republican willing to work with Democrats to preserve the character of her district even as it grows.
