The results of the 2024 elections gave many North Carolinians reason for hope. In a state that voted for Donald Trump, we did something extraordinary. We elected a Democratic governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general, and we broke the Republican supermajority in the state legislature by one vote.

The people of our state sent a clear message — they rejected one-party rule and demanded a government that reflects all of us. But Republicans in the state legislature wasted no time showing their contempt for the will of the voters. Instead of respecting this mandate for balance, they resorted to cynical power grabs and relentless attacks on our democratic institutions.

It is perfectly reasonable to be angry with what is happening in our state government right now. But anger alone won’t fix what’s broken. The fight for a fair and equitable North Carolina is far from over, and as long as we stay engaged, we still have a chance to build the future we deserve.

North Carolina’s story is one of resilience. As the first Black woman to lead a legislative caucus in our state, I know the perseverance it takes to overcome challenges, especially in the face of those who refuse to honor your power. But this resilience isn’t just my story. It’s the story of countless communities across North Carolina that have come together time and again to rally against injustice and demand change.

Today, our resolve is being tested once more. Gerrymandered voting maps, efforts to strip power from Democratic elected officials and the consolidation of authority into the hands of a few aren’t just attacks on Democrats — they’re attacks on democracy. These moves erode the principles that should unite us: fair elections and accountable governance.

In the face of these challenges, it’s natural to feel discouraged. Many are rightly angry about underfunded schools, rising healthcare costs and the daily struggles of affording basic necessities. Anger and frustration can be powerful catalysts for change. Grassroots energy has always fueled progress in our state, and now is the time to channel that energy into action.

Republicans benefit when we’re isolated and afraid because they thrive on division and inaction. But we are stronger than that. We must organize, mobilize and fight back. Attend town halls and public meetings. Share your stories with your neighbors. Demand accountability from those in power. These small steps build the momentum needed to push back against those who seek to silence us.

There is power in unity. There is power in showing up. And there is power in standing together to stop the worst from happening.

North Carolina Senate Democrats are in this fight with you. We are working tirelessly to address the critical issues facing our state: recruiting and retaining qualified teachers and public employees, securing affordable housing, expanding access to affordable healthcare and ensuring economic growth that benefits everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected.

We know Republicans are unlikely to support these efforts. Instead, they will likely double down on policies that divert resources from public schools, increase costs for working families and ignore the needs of rural communities. We fight because these issues transcend politics. They cut to the core of who we are and the state we want to be.

When we stand together, we can demand better for North Carolina. We can invest in public education so every child has access to a quality school. We can build a healthcare system that prioritizes patients over profits. We can create an economy that works for all — not just the privileged.

North Carolina stands at a crossroads. Will we allow a system that prioritizes political power over the people it’s meant to serve? Will we accept leaders who make our lives harder for their own gain? Or will we rise together and demand a government that reflects the needs and aspirations of its citizens?

Every North Carolinian can join us in this fight. Make your voice heard. Hold those in power accountable. The future of our state depends on our ability to work together, stand firm in our values and refuse to back down.

Democrats in the General Assembly are ready to fight for you. But we can’t do it alone. Let’s turn frustration into action and action into lasting change. Together, we can build a North Carolina where democracy thrives, fairness prevails and every voice is heard.
