Vi Lyles makes one more decision that’s good for Charlotte | Editorial
Our Take offers shorter, urgent opinion from the Editorial Board on news and topics our community is buzzing about:
Vi Lyles’ arrival as Charlotte mayor in 2017 came coated in history. She was our city’s first Black female mayor, and her surprisingly stout 19-point victory marked the end of Republicans having a realistic chance of leading a Charlotte that was suddenly a deeper shade of blue. She also was a different type of Charlotte mayor than most — certainly pleasant but more reserved. But Lyles, who announced this morning that she is leaving office next month, was most definitely the leader Charlotte needed.
At the time, Charlotte was bruised and wearied by fighting with Republican state leadership. HB2, the “bathroom bill” that had come in response to a Charlotte non-discrimination ordinance, had left scars on both the city and state. Lyles worked to repair those relationships, and she quickly earned the respect of at least some leaders in Raleigh. She also rebuilt relationships with Charlotte’s business leaders, and she guided a young City Council with a steady hand.
She has, certainly, endured the bumpiness that comes with leadership. The city suffered from a persistent lack of transparency under her, and some on the City Council felt her steady hand had become too heavy-handed. She also could be prone to defensiveness about her office and her city, and her delayed and initially inadequate response to Iryna Zarutska’s murder last year allowed the tragedy to bloom into controversy, putting Charlotte in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
But our city, under Lyles, has largely thrived. She has been a strong mayor, and she would have cruised to reelection next year if that’s what she had wanted. While her leaving office early raises questions about why she ran for it again last year, it also may be one more decision that is right for our city. A new voice, with new energy, will be a reset for Charlotte, and the process of deciding our next mayor is an opportunity to explore what our city’s next chapter should look like.
On this day, however, Charlotte can and should appreciate the mayor who helped bring us here. We congratulate Vi Lyles for the leader she’s been, and we wish her a relaxing and rewarding path ahead.
