Mamdani skips endorsement for NY-12 race with Jack Schlossberg
Zohran Mamdani shut down all further NYC congressional endorsements for now, snubbing one of the most highly-watched districts this election cycle: NY-12.
The district has caught national attention, particularly from Jack Schlossberg - a social media personality and Kennedy heir - running in the race.
It also covers some of the most important parts of the city, including the United Nations and the Empire State Building.
Here's what to know.
Who's running for NY-12?
The Democratic and Republican primary for the seat is taking place in June.
The top names running for the Democrat spot on the ballot are:
- Alex Bores: NY assemblymember
- George Conway: lawyer
- Micah Lasher: NY assemblymember
- Jack Schlossberg: social media personality
Schlossberg has been the one to catch most of the national attention, however. He's the son of Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, and has become known for his sometimes outlandish social media posts.
Schlossberg has taken a lead in some polls, and received the endorsement of Nancy Pelosi. But most current polls show either Bores or Lasher as frontrunners for the spot.
Why did Mamdani not endorse anyone for NY-12?
After a shocking endorsement for another district on MS NOW, Mamdani said that it was his "final congressional endorsement in New York City."
"I can tell you that this completes my congressional slate that I'm so proud of."
Right before Mamdani went on The Briefing with Jen Psaki, Schlossberg posted that he was the only one in the NY-12 to endorse the NYC mayor.
A list made by City & State NY during the election says that Lasher and Bores did endorse Mamdani, however.
It's not immediately clear why Mamdani isn't endorsing a candidate for NY-12, as he is a constituent in the area. The mayor's office did not immediately respond to USA TODAY on a request for comment.
On Thursday, May 27, in an interview with NBC News, Schlossberg said that he wants "the mayor to do whatever he thinks is the best thing for him and the city to succeed," when asked if he wanted Mamdani's endorsement.
"I am definitely much more in line with his views than my opponents, so I think he should do what he thinks is the right thing to do."
