Independence is translated as having fully achieved the capability of self-governing. To be accepted as fully independent the definition suggests we have learned self-control and mastered our impulses and our fears.

There are those who would trade liberty for safety, but history has repeatedly proven even they will attain neither. Our forefathers had learned from their experiences. The citizen who seeks to trade his freedom for security will soon become aware that he has chosen to become a slave.

The world is full of threats, but none worth the surrender of liberty for false security. To be the land of the free, we must remain the home of the brave.
