In the Triangle, getting ahead of the heat

In Raleigh, we know it’s just too hot when restaurants with lots of outdoor seating, usually full, have lines waiting for an inside table. Raleigh’s Players’ Retreat has cool misters in its large outdoor area, but after a certain point the most ardent nature lovers opt for a blast of the old AC.

So here are the usual tips from the health people: Drink lots of water; don’t spend too much time outside, especially in the sun; wear hats when you are outside; give your pets plenty to drink and keep them inside in the heat of the day; eat less, and eat more salads and less heavy protein; and, yes, use the air conditioning.

We’re just now getting a taste of things to come, with temperatures in triple digits. More’s coming, we know. August is still a couple of weeks away, and that’s typically the worst month for heat.
