Doug Jurney: Military overkill

Donald Trump has received the endorsement of a group of military officers who want more money spent on military. Some facts are pertinent. In spite of having vast oceans on each side and friends in the attic (Canada) and basement (Mexico), we spend 37 percent of the world’s military budget – as much as the next 12 countries even though 11 of them are allies.

In 2015 our military spending was $598 billion versus $146 billion for China, $82 billion for Saudi Arabia, $66 billion for Russia and $56 billion for England. (all in U.S. 2015 dollars). We just launched a $13 billion aircraft carrier (Gerald Ford) and are struggling with the F-35 fighter program that may cost $1 trillion when complete.

Of course, military officers want more money. They always do. And we may need it if we continue invading Third World countries on the other side of the world that are of little threat to the U.S. – and staying for a decade or longer. Is there anyone who can bring some sanity and common sense to this?

Doug Jurney

Former Air Force officer
