Bonnie Bleiweiss: School surprise

Although teacher’s pay has risen to 41st in rankings (still abominable), most teachers are not better off. They have lost teacher assistants, there are no supplies for schools and the state has taken away tax-free days for purchasing school supplies. All this means is they are spending all of that increase on their students and working longer hours without overtime pay effectively giving them a pay cut or at least status quo.

Additionally schools are dirtier germy places because janitorial services have been cut, counselors are a thing of the past, nurses only come once in awhile and special needs kids get the shaft.

In my experience, employees are happier and will work for lower wages when they have the best working conditions. Currently I’m surprised anyone would want to be a teacher.
