Robert D. Love: Deteriorating ethanol

The writer of Sept. 7 letter “Biofuels and boats” praising ethanol fuel appeared to be working with fresh gasoline.

The real problem with ethanol in gas is that it deteriorates over time, leading to engine problems. You can confirm this statement by asking mechanics who work on small engine repair, including those at your local hardware store and at any marine shop that fixes boat motors.

The best we can do with ethanol gas if it will be lying in the tank for any period of time is to add stabilizers to it and to use the highest octane available.
