Michael Jay: NCAA hypocrites

Regarding the Sept. 13 news article “North Carolina loses championship events”: The moral beacons at the NCAA have determined that North Carolina is not fit to host NCAA tournaments because of House Bill 2.

Yet, these hypocrites didn’t seem to have a problem with a member institution playing a lacrosse game in Jamaica, a country described by some human rights groups as the most homophobic country in the world and where homosexual acts are punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment. Nor did they raise any objections to Coastal Carolina’s basketball team playing three games in Cuba, a country with a horrific history of mistreating homosexuals and whose current “equal opportunity” law does not cover gender identity (sound familiar?).

If it truly believes its stated principles, the NCAA would ban all state-supported universities in North Carolina from participating in NCAA events. At least this would be morally consistent, but might result in the type of economic losses to the NCAA that it is trying to inflict on our state. Its efforts would be better served by persuading the Charlotte City Council to retract its amendment to the city’s Non-Discrimination Ordinances (the instigator of this whole mess) and the state legislature to simultaneously withdraw HB2. Almost everybody would be happier.
