Peter V. Andrews: HB2 ‘indefensible’
Regarding the Sept. 16 news article “McCrory blames politics for the HB2 fallout”: Gov. Pat McCrory is right, but it is Republicans who are to blame for House Bill 2, not Democrats.
HB2 was hurriedly put together by our Republican-controlled legislature, passed and sent to McCrory to sign. The Republicans thought that state Attorney General Roy Cooper would refuse to defend the law and that they could use this against Cooper in his 2016 campaign for governor. Cooper did refuse to defend the law – it appears no one can.
It is simply indefensible. It is not only a constitutional issue, it is a classic case of trying to fix something that was not broken!
Any reasonable, sensible group of people would admit their mistake and repeal the law. But our Republican governor and legislature are neither reasonable nor sensible – they seem determined to “hang tough,” and they may be hanging for a long time.
Our only recourse as sensible, reasonable people is to vote them out of office in November – as many as we can. Only then can we begin to repair the damage to our economy and to our image as one of the more progressive Southern states.
