Christina Dean: Military fights for our flag

Regarding the Sept. 22 letter “An effective lesson” about the history teacher who stomped on the American flag during class: My husband is a combat veteran of the Vietnam war, and he was one of those spat upon after returning.

I would not disagree that it is a great thing that Americans have the right to protest without being in fear of terrible consequences. But perhaps we can also consider our brave and selfless military who have made extraordinary sacrifices defending that American flag, the rich symbol of the freedoms we cherish.

Sometimes taking the “high road” is better than making a point or, as in the teacher’s case, a teaching opportunity. Then again, I am reminded that taking the high road is often the one less traveled.
