Anne Burke: Help for disadvantaged

Regarding the Sept. 23 news article “Campbell law school opens free legal clinic downtown”: Kudos to Campbell Law Dean Rich Leonard for spearheading a new Community Law Clinic in downtown Raleigh to help serve the needs of people often hamstrung with legal problems for which they have no money to address.

Legal Aid has long been the agency providing legal services to these same people, but after long years of reduced funding, Legal Aid cannot meet the total need.

The Community Clinic is a boon for our community and for good people working to improve their lives. It is also a wonderful opportunity to expose students to the legal struggles so many people face. Taking referrals from established agencies is another good move. The folks being referred have a support system of social service professionals behind them.
