Jon Gibson: Wolfpack past better than present

Regarding the Sept. 29 letter “Expensive showcase” questioning why in the world NCSU would cough up $35 million to refurbish ancient Reynolds Coliseum: I think it’s a ploy to create a diversion for the restless big-donor alumni who remain disgruntled because the football and basketball teams have not been competitive in years (some would argue decades) and there is zero evidence to show that football coach Dave Doeren and basketball coach Mark Gottfried are capable of changing that fact in the foreseeable future.

So what can athletic director Debbie Yow do in the meantime to appease the fan base? Hey, let’s spiff up Reynolds, hold some ongoing nostalgia parties, revel again and again in the good times from days long ago and just maybe she can keep the big donors at bay until she rides off into the sunset in a couple of years or so. It might work.
