Jonathan Gerard: Radio station’s hypocrisy

Regarding the Oct. 5 sports article “Marching band protest gets ECU game off radio station”: In the hierarchy of values, WFAY-AM fails the intelligence test.

In boycotting an upcoming East Carolina football game to protest 19 band members’ recent kneeling during the national anthem “to protest racial injustice and police brutality,” the station disparages the First Amendment’s freedom of expression clause, despite its benefits, even as it glorifies the Second Amendment’s “right to bear arms” clause, despite its consequences.

The gun amendment is connected to a “well regulated militia.” What part of “well regulated” do they not understand? And for how long will the right to unfettered gun ownership trump a right to life? Peaceful protest is not only a hallmark of American patriotism, it is our greatest bulwark against violent protest. WFAY needs a lesson in civics as well as patriotism.
