Laura G. Crumpler: Protests show students care about America

My heart-felt thanks to the ECU band members who took a stand and set a positive example of what makes America great at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Hunter Marketto (Dylan Allen and he unfurled the American flag) was quoted in Barry Saunders’ column “Two different ECU band protests, both worthy of our respect”: “One of the main details that is getting lost in all this is that the ones who knelt (during the national anthem in protest of police brutality against black males) were 110 percent behind Dylan and me, just as we were 110 percent behind them.”

Oh say can you see! Our youth know what America is all about. How grateful I am for this ray of hope. And kneeling during the national anthem? I think someone sees what they look for: I see a prayer for justice.
