Martha Brock: Honor Dix hospital with museum

Regarding the Oct. 17 news article “Gathering explores ideas for Dix hospital memorial”: I have asked for a much more moving and dynamic memorial than a statue or physical monument.

That is why I suggested a museum at the entrance to the cemetery with a small viewing room showing a video documentary. The video should be based on the life and legacy of Dorothea L. Dix with an emphasis on her theory of recovery and her tie to the history of North Carolina. Other displays could include oral histories gathered from former patients and their relatives or loved ones and others directly connected to the history of the hospital or the Dix farm and campus.

Many, many people lived there and called Dix hill “home.” If this cannot be done by city of Raleigh, then the same plan could be used to create an exhibit at the N.C. Museum of History.
