Mike Lamson: State GOP shows true colors by supporting Trump
The Oct. 27 Focus article “N.C. Republicans fighting to keep control of House say they’d work with Trump” was troubling, not because that would be expected from any elected official but because, as writer Anna Douglas pointed out, “no North Carolina Republican in Congress has rescinded an endorsement of Donald Trump.”
In fact, Sen. Richard Burr continues to support Donald Trump and dismisses his incendiary rhetoric as entertainment, even as a sizable number of prominent Republicans publicly denounce him.
I am no politician, but I would think that anyone with an ounce of personal conviction would know that silence equates to agreement on matters of public importance. What are we to make of their silence or tacit approval of Trump?
There is a word that describes the behavior of certain overzealous, conspiracy-minded Trump supporters – Birthers, Bathers (those who bathe in Trump’s rhetoric) and Hillary Haters – and it’s not, adorable.
The same could be said of state GOP politicians who sit back, watch their presidential nominee tarnish the Republican brand, and do nothing to stop it.
