Carolyn Christman: Keep investigating
The cornerstone of democracy is a free and active press that serves as a watchdog of government by reporting the truth. The News & Observer and its sister papers perform this role admirably in North Carolina.
Yet The N&O has a unique role in holding state government accountable for lazy, inept, dishonest and wrongful actions by those in positions of trust.
The paper’s investigative reporting has changed many governmental practices for the better, and this was true in the case of its investigation into the state crime lab.
It is my trust that the libel verdict will be overturned on appeal when a fuller hearing of the case will be made.
Democracy is not easy, especially during this time when reality itself seems endangered, and we owe The N&O a tremendous gratitude for its courage, determination and persistence.
