Gerald LeBlanc: Gender not based solely on DNA
The writer of the Oct. 27 letter “Gender based on DNA” argued that gender is dictated by our genes and, therefore, the sex noted on the birth certificate is absolute. If it were only that simple.
Sure, our DNA contains the blueprint for male versus female sex. However, our sexuality is dictated by an elegant orchestration of hormones, enzymes and processes that we do not fully understand, many of which mold the brain not the genitals. The result is wondrous range of biologically based sexualities.
Identifying sex based strictly upon genitals grossly undermines the true nature of sex.
