Andy Maholick: Electoral College helps rural states be heard

Dismayed Democrats are always looking for ways to get election results changed. Fortunately, the founders selected a republic rather than a democracy for the form of government.

Had they gone the other way, then the people at the time in the cities of New York, Boston and Philadelphia would have determined the election.

People in southern states, which were mostly rural, would have had no voice. Things would have been pretty much as they are today with the poor voting for candidates that promise them income redistribution in return for their votes.

The Electoral College forces the candidates to pay attention to each state’s interests if they want to win.
