Jennifer Tlusty: Electoral College an antiquated system

Although Donald Trump was elected by our current Electoral College system and we must now support him, I believe we must also start a grass roots movement to eliminate the college.

It has now been twice in just 16 years that the candidate with the highest total of votes (popular vote) has not been elected – Al Gore in 2000 and now Hillary Clinton in 2016.

And while I have great respect for the Founding Fathers, they could not possibly have foreseen how the population of the United States could grow to this number of citizens by the 21st century.

The “winner-take-all” electoral votes in each state system is antiquated and must go.

I sincerely hope that all of the young and not-so-young people who have been out protesting since the election will put their energy into changing this no-longer workable system.

Jennifer Tlusty
