Scott Morford: Electoral College serves its purpose
When considering the pros and cons of the Electoral College, consider what occurs in Illinois. Because the governor is elected by a majority, Cook County (Chicago) often elects the executive.
In the recent past, the governor won three counties in the state yet won the office. Undue power exists due to population, (number of representatives and the executive). I doubt anyone wants the U.S. to resemble Illinois.
The Electoral College was meant to distribute influence more evenly. The nation’s founders were very intelligent people. We need to think long and hard when contemplating changing their processes, especially when it’s because something happened we didn’t like. Before proclaiming how bad the college is, learn why it was made.
Too often, we run on shallow opinion without due diligence. In essence, study, and be careful what we wish for.
