Roger Mays: Wolfpack needs stability

My N.C. State experience began watching the Buckey twins, then Johnny Evans compete against our ACC foes, so I go back a way. While not a rabid fan, I certainly enjoy watching the Pack on Saturdays, and I can tell you who all the head coaches have been.

This letter is not a bash of Coach Dave Doeren, but at the same time I no longer sit quietly and listen to the talking heads insist Doeren has magically reformed the football program. I do think he’s a good coach. His winning percentage and conference winning percentages are worse than the previous four head coaches (Dick Sheridan, Mike O’Cain, Chuck Amato and Tom O’Brien), especially the conference percentage.

This season the Pack was competitive in all but the Louisville game but won only one game against a “power 5” school with a winning record. So talking heads, go to the library on occasion!

The Pack needs to keep Doeren and build consistency over time, the last three coaches were around six years, then canned for another coach who performed about the same. I don’t get that, especially when the only obvious change is the cost of the next guy, not an actually increase in the winning percentage.

Doeren might be able to do a better job if he wasn’t having to look over his shoulder constantly.
