Susan Cohen: Don’t pass laws hastily
Regarding the Dec. 15 news article “Lawmakers look to limit Cooper’s power as governor”: I am writing as a North Carolina resident to express my utter disgust at attempts to use disasters like Hurricane Matthew and the mountain fires to substantively change the way the governor and legislature operate.
A special session should respond to urgent relief needs. This not only wastes money (at $45K per day); it violates the clear will of the people who cast their votes in November. Please vote against all of these needless bills.
If there is regular work to be done, it should happen during a regular session and with ample time for legislators to read and discuss bills and for the people to weigh in.
