Berry A. Williams: A bad precedent for democracy
Regarding the Dec. 15 news article “Lawmakers look to limit Cooper’s power as governor”: It appears the Republican Party is attempting to violate the will of the people as expressed in the recent election for governor. This goes against what America stands for and has fought to preserve through many wars.
We fought World War II to ensure our freedom and the freedom of those in Europe, the Pacific and beyond. Freedom is only maintained when the vote of the people means something.
Roy Cooper was elected by the majority because the voters think North Carolina is moving in the wrong direction. Actions to diminish the power of the governor are actions against the vote of the people.
Some in the General Assembly would steal from the voters what they could not win at the ballot box. If changes are warranted they should be made after a deliberative process where public discussion is encouraged, and the people get a vote.
Changes in the balance of power between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government should only be made by the people.
As someone who has worn the uniform and fought for this country I am appalled by the proposed actions in the General Assembly. Vladimir Putin says democracy doesn’t work, don’t prove him right!
