Mark Kinlaw: Is Wake going to be example?

Regarding the March 11 news article “Bill could strengthen Republicans”: I have a question about the current legislature’s efforts to change the way Wake County elects its board of commissioners. I strongly support equal representation, and if this is the right thing, then fine, but why is it doing anything at all?

Why is the state legislature forcing a single county to change its local election policies? Is Wake County the only county in North Carolina to not have districts for electing commissioners? If it’s right for Wake County, it should be right for everyone.

It’s funny. The GOP in Congress has for years complained that the federal government interferes too much in what should be decisions made by the states. Yet our GOP leaders in North Carolina are doing the exact opposite here. Go figure.
