Lisa Morrell: Gerrymandering Wake County

Regarding the March 6 news article “Wake Dems blast local election bill”: In November, Republicans lost control of the Wake County Board of Commissioners by legal and democratic means representing the will of the majority of Wake County voters.

So what happens now that the NCGA is back in session? Sen. Chad Barefoot, perhaps after binge watching “House of Cards,” files Senate Bill 181 to alter Wake County commissioners voting boundaries in a way that all but assures Republican control of the board. This move represents a disdain for democratic principles worthy of a Third World country that’s merely pretending people’s votes actually count for something.

If the NCGA votes this bill into law, then we as North Carolina residents have little choice but to conclude that the supporters have neither respect nor regard for the democratic principles that the great state of North Carolina and the United States of America were founded upon.
