Gregory McGann: Democratic moves make Iran letter seem benign

Regarding the March 12 column “The GOP’s breakaway nation”: Dana Milbank’s column made sense only if we do not understand that President Obama is not a king and that Congress is a co-equal branch of government.

As to his inability to find precedent for the Republicans’ open letter to Iran, perhaps he should look up the Democrats’ “Dear Commandante” letter to communist dictator Daniel Noriega. He can find this record of 10 Democrats promising to work against the Reagan administration in the April 20, 1984, New York Times.

How about Ted Kennedy’s offer to the KGB in 1983 to work with Yuri Andropov to undermine President Reagan’s foreign policy as reported in the New York Post in 2009? How about Nancy Pelosi’s 2007 trip to visit with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to undermine President Bush’s Middle East initiative?

When compared with the malfeasance of these Democrats, the Senate letter reminding Iran that the U.S. Constitution requires any treaty to be ratified by the Senate is fairly benign.
