Bob Hancock: Tax consequences no surprise
I was dismayed to read yet “Another taxing story” (March 14 letter). This letter was written by a North Carolina educator. She seemed to have lost her $600 N.C. tax refund and instead has to pay $8 this year. She is obviously disappointed in the Republican leadership in Raleigh.
I must defend these Republicans! Our governor and our elected legislators were very transparent in their campaign promises: tax cuts for the wealthy, tax cuts for corporations, elimination of most tax credits for the poor and for the middle class. The News & Observer did a fabulous job of keeping the residents of North Carolina informed about the changes to come.
Being an educator, the writer should not have been surprised at her 2014 N.C. tax refund and liability. She did admit her mistake: voting for Republicans. Unfortunately, her conscience will not allow her to vote for a Democrat. I would expect someone who is teaching our children to be more “fair and balanced.”
Although I feel that all citizens should vote in our elections, I also feel that the ignorant and uninformed should stay home on Election Day. The writer has promised to save gas and sit out the next election. Thanks.
