Steve Walker: Leadership with a big price

Regarding the March 14 Point of View “What really matters in college sports”: It was quite a nice opinion piece about the leadership qualities that are developed in those who participate in college athletics, especially the many young men and women who play what is known as Olympic sports. I’m sure those benefits are real, to the participants and quite possibly to society as a whole.

It is curious, however, that one of the authors of the Point of View was Kevin White, vice president and director of athletics at Duke. Duke pays the famous and extraordinarily successful men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski in the range of $9 million annually. Is providing leadership qualities that expensive? I think White is being a bit self serving here.
